Welcome to Mrs. Wilde's Webpage!

My name is Tanya Wilde.  I am in my second year of teaching first grade at Shalom Christian Academy.  This year I have a great class of eighteen students!

Background:

I graduated from Conestoga Valley High School (in Lancaster) in 1999.

I graduated from Shippensburg University with a degree in Elementary Education in 2003.

For two years I was a substitute teacher, mostly in Tuscarora School District.

I am currently working towards getting my Master's Degree in Reading at Shippensburg University.

My Favorite Aspect of Teaching:

I love watching students complete tasks independently that they used to need help with.  I also really enjoy first grade because of how far students come with their reading.  At the beginning of the year I show the students books that they will be able to read at the end of the year.  They look at the books and think that they will never be able to read them.  Then after a few months they are very excited because they can do it!

Hobbies:

Reading is one of my favorite things to do! Whenever I have extra time I can be found reading all kinds of books. I also enjoy being outside. My husband and I love going hiking and biking. We also like playing with Asia, our German Shepherd.

First Grade Curriculum

Language: In first grade we review the sound of each letter. Students learn long and short vowels. Students also learn many special sounds that greatly improve their reading abilities. We go over rhyming words, opposites, root words, suffixes, prefixes, and ABC order.

Math: This year students will learn their math facts to ten (addition and subtraction). They will also learn how to graph, count money (pennies, nickels, and dimes), tell time to the half hour, and identify fractional parts of a whole.

Spelling: Students will have 10 words per week at the beginning of the year which will increase to 15 words per week at the end of the year. Spelling words go along with special sounds that students are learning during Language time.

Bible: In first grade students will learn about neighbors and their families. They will also learn how nothing is impossible with God through stories such as Zechariah and Elizabeth having a baby. Students learn a great deal about the life of Jesus of how they can share Jesus with others. Old Testament lessons include Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Jacob and Esau, and Joseph.

Social Studies: Students learn about their country in first grade. This includes some of the history of our country as well as landmarks that can be found in our country. Students also learn about other countries in the world.

Science: In Science students learn about the bodies that God gave them. They will also be leaning about animals, insects, and plants.
