WELCOME

Hello! My name is Mrs. Nancy Hussack and I have the pleasure of teaching at Shalom Christian Academy.I work in the Resource Room which hopes to provide scholastic resources for students grades k-12.Whether a student needs a challenging enrichment activity or study skills to supplement their subject areas, the Shalom Resourse Room strives to help a student find success. That's why I love my job!

Favorite Aspect Of Teaching

Determining  the strengths and weaknesses of students and then implementing a scholastic plan of action is one of my favorite aspects of teaching.  Another favorite aspect of working with students in a Christian school setting is being able to bring the Word of God to bear in all areas of learning.  Collaborading and communicating with teachers and parents are additional encouraging features of working in the Shalom Resource Room.

Educational Background and Teaching Experience

I did my undergraduate and graduate work at Shippensburg University and taught at a local private school and at several public schools. Developmental reading,  English, speech and drama are classes I've taught at the junior and senior high

level .  But,  it was when my husband Mike (a high school English teacher) and I decided to homeschool our firstborn that my teaching experience got a real workout. We homeschooled each of our four children until they reached  fourth grade, so being part of the homeschool community gave me valuable insight into some excellent curriculum materials and successful homeschool programs.  I am a homeschool evaluator with  The Pennsylvania Homeschoolers Accreditation Agency which has afforded me the privilege of seeing highschoolers continue onto post high school trade schools and universities.

What Happens in the Shalom Resource Room?

Students K through 12th grade are welcome to use the Resource Room and may enter the program at each marking period. Resource Room includes work in the following areas: Support for regular classroom studies-students are tutored in challenging subjects using teacher lecture notes, flashcards, highlighted student notes, supplemental materials and various neumonic devices for mastering material. Reteaching of curriculum materials-students are re-taught skills at a foundational level and at a non-frustration level. Enrichment-students who work beyond the expectations of their regular classroom work are engaged in project-oriented activities they present to their classroom as a culminating effort.

Communication with parents and teachers is another aspect of the Resource Room program that benefits the student especially if organizational skills and time budgeting are needing improvement.

What About Middle School Drama?

In addition to my Resource Room responsibilities, I have the pleasure of coaching aspiring, young actors  in their efforts to interpreting scripts for several productions during the year. It's always encouraging to witness students growing in their understanding of a role and watch them use their art ability to create sets, props and costumes. The dramas are distinctly Christian in nature which is another valuable aspect of middle school play production.
